Fall is upon us… Now is a great time to get outside and get your home or business ready for winter. There are a number of simple things you can do today to get ready for winter and help protect your home or building:
- Make sure all downspouts are operating correctly; are free of leaves and debris and discharge at least 3 to 4 feet from the building structure. (You don’t want the water “running” down the wall into the basement or footer drains if you can help it)
- Repair leaking faucets and shutoff water to the exterior fixtures by mid-November.
- ALWAYS remove hoses from the faucets!! Hoses left attached to the exterior faucet can freeze and damage the faucet or rupture the pipes INSIDE your home or building; be safe, remove the hose, drain the water out of them and store indoor if you can.
- Order your FREE valve tags from Plumbing Professors and be sure you tag your whole house water shutoff valve!
- If you have a sump pump, be sure to check the discharge line; it should be at least 4 feet from the building and free from any obstructions that could restrict the flow of water; restricted flows lead to sump pump repair. Consider a backup sump pump before the rainy season gets here, especially if your sump pump runs on a regular basis.
Remember, if you need help with any of this, we’d be happy to help you, so enjoy the fall season and call us if you need us.
