Don’t let the mild temperatures stop you from winterizing you outdoor fixtures and hoses.
Most things shrink when they get cold (no wise cracks please), but water actually expands when it freezes. As it expands it exerts tremendous forces when in a confined space…like your garden hose or outdoor faucet. The simple act of removing the hose from your outdoor faucet can prevent a major frozen pipe break or a flooded basement. So do this TODAY:
- Turn off the water supply to all exterior faucets TODAY;
- Remove hoses from all exterior faucets TODAY;
- Open each exterior faucet a little bit so water can drain out and leave them open TODAY.
That’s it, you’re done and you have just saved yourself a ton of aggravation by possibility preventing frozen pipes or a burst pipe this winter. (If you’re feeling really motivated, you can even cover your outdoor faucets with a Styrofoam cover; inexpensive at most big box stores)
Winter is right around the corner, so get ready for it.
