It’s so easy to do, you’re done eating breakfast and all you want to do is get the day started. So you quickly clean the kitchen by pouring the grease in the drain, no big deal right?
Wrong!! Grease, fats, and oils should NEVER be put down the drain, and we mean never. We will spare you all the chemistry involved but know this. Grease is liquid when it’s hot, once it cools (somewhere in your pipes) it turns into a sticky blob. In addition, in some cases, it can react with concrete pipes to form a very tenacious, sticky goo that will be a magnet for hair, toilet paper, food particles, wet wipes, etc. These items can build up enough to obstruct the smooth flow of water through the pipe, before you know it, you have a sewer back up dumping raw sewage into your basement or business. That is never fun.
It’s easy to avoid this issue, don’t pour the grease in drains, ever. Instead, pour the grease into an empty can or glass jar, let it cool then throw in the trash. You should also consider a monthly treatment of DMT, Drain Maintenance Treatment.
DMT is a safe, people, pet and pipe friendly treatment that naturally eats everything organic in your pipes, drains and septic system if you have one. It’s made of naturally occurring bacteria, just like the stuff in a compost pile and will not hurt people or pets. We always recommend DMT to clients as natures way to help keep your pipes and drains clean. DMT loves grease, fats, oils, paper products, food waste, hair and just about anything that is organic it will eat. Just remember, the bacteria in DMT are microscopic, so you need to be sure you apply a treatment every month to help reinforce the colonies of bacteria that DMT will produce.
Remember, any grease in drains is very, very bad. So just don’t do it! (Picture credit to https://water.arlingtonva.us)
